ULTRA SOUND

What is ultrasound?

An ultrasound test is a radiology technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the organs and structures of the body. The sound waves are sent through body tissues with a device called a transducer. The transducer is placed directly on top of the skin, which has a gel applied to the surface. The sound waves that are sent by the transducer through the body are then reflected by internal structures as "echoes." These echoes return to the transducer and are transmitted electrically onto a viewing monitor. The echo images are then recorded on a plain film and can also be recorded on videotape. After the ultrasound, the gel is wiped off.

How safe is ultrasound?

Ultrasound testing is painless and harmless. Ultrasound tests involve no radiation and studies have not revealed any adverse effects

What will I experience during ultrasound?

If you’re having an abdominal ultrasound, you will be asked not to eat or drink for six hours before your ultrasound.

If you’re having a pelvic, obstetric, or kidney ultrasound, your bladder should be full. You’ll need to empty your bladder an hour before your exam, and then drink and hold 16 oz. of water until the completion of the ultrasound.

During the ultrasound, you will lie on your back on an examination table. A conducting gel will be placed on your skin. A radiology technologist or radiologist will gently place and move the transducer on your lower abdomen to create the images.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of ultrasound?

An ultrasound is non-invasive and can help in diagnosing and evaluating health conditions without using surgery. Ultrasounds can help to show soft tissues that aren’t easy to see on X-rays.

Ultrasounds don’t work well on dense bones or body parts that contain air or gas, including the bladder.
